WHAT IS DEATH?

This poem was inspired by a Vipassana meditation retreat, where I found myself contemplating the nature of death, and how the certainty of death can serve as our greatest incentive to live our lives fully and joyfully.

“What is Death?” I heard him ask
On my way to work as I walked past
”Because I think today could be my last”

People rushed past without caring or seeing
So caught up in doing, they were not being
But before I could stop I was moving my feet
To sit beside him on the seat
I was going to be late, but I no longer cared
I knew there was something this man had to share

Together we sat in the afternoon sun
Watching the children playing, having fun
Both lost in memories him and I
Of the life that just keeps flowing by
And for this old man it was now complete
As his heart slowed down to its final beat

I held his hand as he breathed his last
And he smiled at me as his life passed
I was honoured to be there at his last breath
And I wondered if I would smile at my own death
But soon my eye were filled with tears
Realising that my life was controlled by fears
I had forgotten it was about receiving and giving
And the acceptance of death is the Art of Living

So why do we fear this thing called death
When it is only the extinguishing of the breath
And time for the soul to leave this physical plane
In order to begin a brand new game
For this experience is the same for us all
Black or white, rich or poor
It is the thing that binds humanity together
And ends this cycle of pain and pleasure
But we do not know what happens when we die
So we have accepted religions corrupted lies
Becoming victims of religion’s spell
Believing the myths of heaven and hell
Instead of seeing death as just a transition
To the next stage of our evolutionary mission
Because death is not an ending it is a new dawn
Another chance to be reborn
For linear time is just an illusion
Keeping us locked in permanent confusion
Time is a spiral that is always in flow
To enable us to learn and constantly grow
Because the past and future are one and the same
Its just we change bodies during the game
In order to experience everything life has to offer
So we are husband and wife, father and mother
Daughters and sons, sisters and brothers
We are all criminals and yet we are all divine
It just depends if you let your love shine
We are all aspects of the Creator that is the ALL
So we cannot ever fall
Our lives are just the product of our choices
And it is up to us how we use our voices
We can choose to fear this thing called life
And continue to live in pain and strife
Or decide to end this bitter fight
and start to shine our love and light
For the Art of Living is the acceptance of Death
That is only the extinguishing of the Breath
